At least 14,014 people were reported dead in Turkey, and 3,162 in Syria. The death toll may continue to rise.

The death toll from the magnitude 7.8 earthquake and its aftershocks that hit southeastern Turkey along its border with Syria continues to rise.

The first earthquake occurred at 4:00 am.
5 p.m. (01:
17 GMT on Monday) focused on the Pazarcik district of Kahramammaras province. Less than 12 hours later, her second tremor of magnitude 7.6 hit the same area. More than 100 aftershocks were recorded after the shaking, and authorities urged people not to risk entering the damaged buildings.
What areas were affected? In a statement from the state-run Anadolu Agency, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said the affected so far include Kalamammaras, Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Adana, Adiyaman, Malatya, Osmaniye, Hatay and Kilis. I have listed the regions. Turkey has declared a three-month state of emergency in 10 provinces affected by the earthquake.

Thousands of people across borders have also been affected in the Syrian provinces of Aleppo, Idlib, Hama and Latakia. The area on the Syrian side affected by the earthquake is divided between government-controlled territory and land held by the country's last opposition party, which is besieged by Russian-backed government forces.
