Lahore:
On Thursday, the Lahore High Court (LHC) gave the Pakistan Electoral Commission (ECP) a comprehensive verdict against Pakistan's Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) plea deal filed within 90 days of the dissolution of the Punjab provincial legislature. I ordered you to provide an answer. February 10 (tomorrow).
Justice Jawad Hassan rejected requests by the ECP and Punjab governor to hear the issue by Monday and called for immediate action from the Electoral Commission.
As the trial began, Shehzad Mazhar, a lawyer representing the ECP, and his MP Rana Mazhood of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) asked the court to hear the matter by Monday.
ECP's attorneys claimed he was recently engaged and was not ready for litigation. PML-N's Rana Mashhood claimed the governor's attorney was busy with the Supreme Court and asked the court to hear the matter by Monday. PTI attorney Ali Zafar argued that the constitution specifically requires elections to be held within 90 days of the dissolution of parliament. He accused the court that the ECP had written to the governor proposing a time frame for holding the election, but the governor had not announced an election date. "Both the ECP and the governor of Punjab have delegated this responsibility to each other," he added.
